South Africa’s vast interior and western coast are stark in comparison to the rest of the country, but it still holds many magical landscapes. If you’re willing to explore the endless plains of the Karoo and Northern Cape, there is plenty to find. The interior is sparsely populated and some small towns feel like a trip back in time.

When growing up, my parents took us on a holiday road trip to new places almost every year. I have fond memories of exploring forgotten towns, their museums and their scenery. Places like Vanwyksdorp, Carnarvon and Nieu-Bethesda all hold great memories of exploration and discovery for me.

Not all the images in this gallery are from such far-flung places, but there are still many places I wish to return to and eventually add to this gallery.

Have a look at CAPTUREARTH to see if I have any workshops in The South African Interior currently on offer.
